Fake cancer medicine racket busted; Key fugitive arrested from Raniganj after 3 years on the run

Delhi Police arrested Sabir Alam, a key accused in a fake cancer medicine supply case, from Raniganj, West Bengal. Sabir Alam had been absconding for three years and was declared a fugitive by the court. The arrest followed information that Alam had traveled to Raniganj for his honeymoon. Police teams conducted searches in local hotels and guest houses before tracking him to Khandra bus station in Burdwan district, where he was apprehended on May 20.

The case first emerged in November 2022 when four individuals were arrested for possession of counterfeit cancer drugs. Subsequent investigations revealed a larger criminal network involving 14 people, including two doctors. The gang was engaged in the production and distribution of fake cancer medicines. Sabir Alam was identified as an important coordinator managing the supply operations in Kolkata and facilitating shipments to Bangladesh.

According to police, the medicines were allegedly sent to Bangladesh and received by Dr. Rasel. Alam reportedly collected cash payments from cancer patients, retaining his share and forwarding the rest to other gang members including Dr. Pabitra Narayan Pradhan and Shubham Manna. Police officials described Alam’s role as significant in the distribution chain.

The police continue to investigate the full scope of the gang’s operations and cross-border links. The arrest of Sabir Alam marks a key development in the ongoing crackdown on the trafficking and distribution of counterfeit cancer medicines linked to this case.
